How to Plan a Morocco Itinerary with a Private Driver
How much driving per day is comfortable, sample routes from 3 to 10 days, and exactly what to send your driver so your Morocco road trip runs smoothly.
Morocco is made for road trips. In a single week you can cross snow-capped mountains, sleep beside the Sahara and wander the medinas of imperial cities. Distances are long, though, and roads wind through mountains, so a good plan makes all the difference. Here's how I help travellers shape an itinerary that's ambitious but still relaxing.
How much driving per day is comfortable?
As a rule of thumb, 4 to 6 hours on the road per day feels comfortable for most travellers once you add photo stops, lunch and a short walk somewhere beautiful. Longer days are possible, for example the drive from Merzouga to Fes, but plan a quieter day after one.
Remember that driving times on a map rarely include the mountain roads, villages and stops that make Morocco special. The road over the High Atlas is spectacular, but it's not a motorway.
With a private driver, the timetable is yours. Stop for mint tea at a viewpoint, detour to a kasbah you spotted, or start late after a long dinner. Just tell your driver.
Sample routes
3 days: a taste of the desert
Marrakesh → Aït Benhaddou → Dades Valley → Merzouga dunes → back towards Marrakesh. It's a lot of driving for three days, but it's the classic way to see the Sahara on a short trip. If you'd rather drive less, the dunes near Zagora are closer, or the Agafay Desert gives you a desert sunset only 45 minutes from Marrakesh.
5 days: Marrakesh to Fes through the Sahara
- Day 1: Marrakesh → Tizi n'Tichka pass → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate or Skoura
- Day 2: Valley of Roses → Dades Gorges
- Day 3: Todra Gorge → Merzouga, sunset over the dunes and a night in a desert camp
- Day 4: Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Ifrane → Fes
- Day 5: Fes medina, or continue to Chefchaouen
Ending in Fes avoids driving the same road twice and lets you fly home from Fes or continue north.
7 days: the imperial cities and the desert
Casablanca → Rabat → Chefchaouen → Fes (with Volubilis and Meknes) → Merzouga → Dades → Aït Benhaddou → Marrakesh. It's a full loop of Morocco's highlights, starting at Casablanca airport and finishing in Marrakesh.
10 days: the full picture
Take the 7-day loop and add two slower days: a night in the High Atlas around Imlil, then a coastal finish in Essaouira to unwind before your flight.
Tips that make a big difference
- Start early on long days. Morning light is beautiful, roads are quieter, and you arrive with time to rest.
- Book riads and desert camps first. Popular places fill up in spring and autumn, so build the route around them.
- Avoid driving back on yourself. One-way routes such as Marrakesh to Fes see more and drive less.
- Allow a buffer. Weather in the Atlas can slow things down in winter. A flexible day keeps the trip stress-free.
- Know that cars can't enter old medinas. Your driver takes you to the nearest point, and riad staff usually meet you to help with luggage.
What to send your driver
To get a clear quote and a smooth trip, send:
- Your travel dates and start and end cities
- The number of travellers and roughly how much luggage
- Where you're staying each night, if already booked
- Flight numbers and times for any airport pick-ups
- Anything special: child seats, a slower pace, places you really want to see
Not sure about a route yet? Send what you have. I'm happy to suggest how to fit it together.
