Marrakesh Airport to Your Riad: What to Expect
Arriving at Marrakech Menara Airport? How the private transfer works, why cars can't reach most riads in the medina, and practical tips for your first hour in Morocco.
Your Moroccan adventure starts the moment you land. Before I started this service I managed riads in Marrakesh, and I saw how much a calm arrival shapes a guest's whole stay. Here's what to expect between the plane and your riad door.
Arriving at Marrakech Menara Airport
Marrakech Menara Airport (code RAK) is close to the city, only a few kilometres from the old medina. Without traffic, the drive to the medina takes around 15 to 25 minutes.
After passport control and baggage collection, walk out into the arrivals hall. Your driver waits there holding a sign with your name. If your flight is early or delayed, don't worry: share your flight number when you book and your driver follows your arrival time.
Why cars can't reach most riads
This surprises many first-time visitors. Most riads are inside the medina, the old walled city, along narrow lanes that cars can't enter. Your driver takes you to the closest point a car can reach. From there, it's usually a short walk.
- Many riads send a member of staff to meet you and guide you through the lanes.
- Porters with handcarts are common for luggage. Agree on a small tip.
- Send your driver your riad's exact name and address so they know the best drop-off point.
Tip from my riad years: message your riad before you fly to tell them your arrival time. They'll often send someone to the drop-off point to meet you and your driver.
Practical tips for your first hour
- Money: the Moroccan dirham (MAD) is mostly obtained inside Morocco. There are cash machines and exchange desks at the airport.
- SIM card: mobile operators have desks in the arrivals area, which is handy for maps and WhatsApp.
- Keep small notes for tips and porters.
- Late arrival? Transfers run at any hour, day or night.
Leaving Marrakesh
For your departure, your driver collects you at the same meeting point near your riad. Allow enough time for check-in and security, especially in busy seasons.
We also drive one-way transfers between cities, for example from Marrakesh to Essaouira, Casablanca or Fes, if you're not flying out of Marrakesh.
