When Is the Best Time to Visit Morocco?
A season-by-season guide to Morocco's weather: desert heat, snow in the Atlas, Atlantic breezes, and what to know about travelling during Ramadan.
Morocco is a year-round destination, but the best time to travel depends on where you're going. The desert, the mountains and the coast each have their own seasons. Here's a simple guide.
At a glance
| Season | Marrakesh & cities | Sahara desert | Atlas mountains | Atlantic coast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | Warm and pleasant | Ideal | Green valleys, snow on peaks early on | Mild |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Very hot | Extremely hot by day | Cooler escape | Breezy and comfortable |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | Warm and pleasant | Ideal | Clear, crisp days | Mild |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Sunny days, cold nights | Mild days, freezing nights | Snow; passes can close | Cool and windy |
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable months for a road trip that combines cities, mountains and desert. Days are warm, nights are mild, and the light is beautiful. These are also the busiest months, so book riads and desert camps early.
Summer: plan around the heat
Inland cities and the desert can get very hot in July and August. Travelling is still very possible: start early, rest in the afternoon, and spend time in the cooler Atlas or on the coast. Essaouira stays refreshingly breezy, and an air-conditioned car makes long drives comfortable.
Winter: sunshine and snow
Winter brings sunny days to Marrakesh but chilly evenings. Riads can feel cold, so pack a warm layer. In the High Atlas, snow makes the scenery magical, but it can occasionally close the Tizi n'Tichka pass for a few hours or longer. A flexible plan and a local driver who watches the road conditions help here. Desert nights can drop close to freezing, though camps provide heavy blankets.
Travelling during Ramadan
During the holy month of Ramadan, many Moroccans fast from dawn to sunset. The dates move about 11 days earlier each year, so check before you travel. Sights stay open and travel works normally, but the pace of daily life changes. Some cafés close during the day, and the evenings after sunset are lively and festive. It's a special time to experience Moroccan hospitality. Just be respectful about eating and drinking in public during the day.
